Pierce College students named to 2011 All-Washington Academic Team

Four Pierce College students will be honored as members of the 2011 All-Washington Academic Team at noon Thursday at South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia. The ceremony recognizes top scholars from community and technical colleges from all over the state with scholarship prizes.

This year, the team members representing Pierce College Puyallup are Kiersten Walden and Marie Lahar. The team members representing Pierce College Fort Steilacoom are Jeanine Ellisor and Phillip Foster.

Pierce Puyallup
Seeking new challenges and responsibility, Kiersten Walden, 17, of Puyallup, started at Pierce College through the Running Start program. This year, she will graduate high school with a diploma and an associate’s degree, and a career path that is very clear. After volunteering at a local hospital, she knows she wants to work in nursing, specifically pediatrics. She said she most enjoys interacting with patients and helping others.

As a violinist, reporter for the campus newspaper, Running Start student, and active volunteer for a number of organizations, Marie Lahar, 18, of Puyallup, is as busy as they come. But, it’s all worth it to achieve her dream of attending a four-year college. She will finish this year at Pierce College with a high school diploma and an associate’s degree. She plans to study environmental engineering this fall.

Pierce Fort Steilacoom
It was a personal tragedy that led Jenine Ellisor, 48, of Dupont, to higher education. Her 20-year-old son died by suicide and Ellisor wanted to do whatever she could to ensure no other mother would have to face such loss. A motivated student, she takes her learning outside the classroom by helping other students in crisis, solidifying her commitment to becoming a youth crisis counselor.

Looking at Phillip Foster now as a tutor, gifted student, and aspiring physicist, it’s hard to believe he knows what it’s like to struggle in school, fall behind, and finally drop out, but that was his reality as a teenager. Today, just as education helped Foster, 27, of Puyallup, get his life back on track, he has made it his mission to help others struggling with the same tough choices.

All four students, by virtue of their inclusion on the state team, will receive $750 scholarships from Key Bank and the Northwest Education Loan Association. In addition, they are now nominated for the 2011 All-USA Academic Team. Officials from Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for students of two-year colleges, will select students for the All-USA team.

CrossCurrents 30th Anniversary Traveling Exhibition comes to Pierce College Feb. 28-March 31

Pierce College will celebrate the work of more than 30 artists and writers with a special, two-campus gallery show highlighting 30 years of CrossCurrents magazine.

The show will run from Feb. 28 to March 31 in the galleries at both Pierce College Fort Steilacoom and Pierce College Puyallup.

For the Pierce Fort Steilacoom show, an artists’ reception will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 2. There will be a poetry reading at 5 p.m. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome to attend.

For 30 years, CrossCurrents has championed the arts, conversation, and reflection. The art and literary pieces highlighted exemplify this mission and cover a wide range of media and topics. Featured artists include Yvette O’Neill, David Roholt, Rick Mahaffey, and Joe Batt.

Pierce College receives grant to start a Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success

Veteran students will soon have a dedicated center and a team of specially trained advocates to help them in their pursuit of higher education.

On Wednesday, Pierce College was notified it had been selected to receive a three-year, $364,000 grant from the federal Department of Education to develop a Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success at Pierce College Fort Steilacoom.

This center will provide veteran students a designated space to gather and learn, a person to help with one-on-one attention, and services to help them be successful in higher education and transition into civilian life.

Pierce College serves a large number of veteran students. Last year, the Fort Steilacoom campus alone served 1,084 veteran students.

For Carol Green, vice president of learning and student success at Pierce College Fort Steilacoom, this center represents not only a major accomplishment for the college, but a personal victory.

“Through my son’s career in the military (her son has served in Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq), I’ve learned so much about what armed services personnel do and how much they sacrifice for each of us,” she said. “This center is a way for us as an institution to say ‘thank you’ and to help them to an educational pathway.”

Pierce College anticipates the center will provide veterans with dedicated tutors, small-group instruction groups in critical courses, and evening and weekend study tables staffed with additional math and writing tutors. The grant will also provide veterans with directed funds for childcare and transportation assistance, as well as other emergency needs, including housing assistance. Pierce College faculty and staff will be specially trained to increase their knowledge of the effects of war zone stressors and the complex needs of veterans.

The grant was made official today. Green said she and her team are already working to redistribute staff duties and secure a location on campus for the new center.

Pierce College offering new therapist assistant program

Starting next spring Pierce College will offer a new option for students wishing to pursue careers in health care. The physical therapist assistant program targets students interested in receiving high-quality career training, while still maintaining their family and work schedules. The deadline to apply for the program is Nov. 5. Classes start in March.

The nine-quarter, part-time program is offered to Pierce College students through a partnership with Whatcom Community College in Bellingham. Pierce students will take online classes and complete in-person lab experiences one weekend per month in Bellingham. It is a schedule that accommodates students with family and work obligations according to Lisa Murray, advising coordinator at Pierce College.

“This is the perfect option for working students and parents wishing to break into a really exciting health-care field,” she said. “Physical therapist assistants typically enjoy high wages, fairly flexible schedules and satisfaction from knowing they are helping people recover from, or cope with, illness and injury.”

Physical therapist assistants work with licensed physical therapists to provide treatment for physical injuries and disabilities. This includes training patients in therapeutic exercises, providing hands-on treatment, documenting patient progress and using special equipment. Assistants are needed in hospitals, pediatric centers, sports medicine clinics, private practices, retirement communities and home health agencies.

LAKEWOOD — One of the Puget Sound region’s most respected artists, Sarah Waldo, is the featured artist at the inaugural show of the 2010-11 gallery season at the Pierce College Fort Steilacoom Fine Arts Gallery.

A reception for Waldo will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome to attend.

Waldo’s painting have been featured at more than 60 juried shows and 45 invitational shows in the U.S. and Japan. She’s won numerous awards and has served as a member of the Puget Sound Sumi Artists and the Women Painters of Washington. Her work will be on display at Pierce College through Oct. 15.

Pierce College receives $1.2 million grant to assist students in transition to college

Pierce College was recently awarded a five-year, $1.2 million grant from the Department of Education to continue the TRIO Student Support Services program at the Fort Steilacoom campus. This grant was especially competitive as the Department of Education reduced the total number of projects by 40 for this award cycle.

Since 2001, the TRIO SSS program has provided academic and personal support to 160 first-generation, low-income and/or disabled students each year, helping them navigate higher education. This new grant will allow Pierce College to continue offering this critical service to students for an additional five years. The TRIO SSS program works with students who have traditionally struggled to be successful in post-secondary education and helps them to reach their academic goals.

“The continued funding of Pierce College demonstrates the importance of this program and validates the hard work of Pierce College staff and faculty in helping students to be successful,” said Joelle Pretty, Pierce College’s TRIO director. “Many TRIO students need extra help when they first come to Pierce College because their math and English skills are below college level. Because of this grant, 160 individuals who might get discouraged early in their education are given the support and encouragement to thrive.”

The TRIO SSS program provides structured events and activities plus college-level courses that help students develop study skills, identify and maximize their learning styles, set goals, and build personal resources for success. Comprehensive, early assessment and ongoing interaction with advisors give students effective, personal educational plans that incorporate their long-term goals.

The Pierce College veterans program is hosting a performance of Into the Fire, a moving play that chronicles the real-life experiences of veterans returning from Iraq, Afghanistan, and Vietnam with disabilities and combat-related trauma.

The free performance begins at noon Thursday, Nov. 5, at the Health Education Center, Pierce College Fort Steilacoom, 9401 Farwest Dr. SW, Lakewood. Following the performance, the actors and playwrights will facilitate an interactive discussion of war’s effects on families and communities.

Into the Fire recreates the real stories of both male and female veterans with such disabilities as traumatic brain injury, hearing loss, loss of limbs, chronic pain, mobility challenges, and post-traumatic stress disorder. The stories are interspersed with humor and music to allow audiences to process the veterans’ powerful stories.

In addition to the play, Pierce is welcoming veterans, active duty military, and their families to attend a special Veterans and Military Resource Fair from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, at the Health Education Center at Pierce Fort Steilacoom. Veterans and military personnel will connect with local resources that can help with confidential counseling, financial management, childcare, veterans’ benefits, pre-deployment readiness, vocational rehabilitation, and educational funding.

In addition, the VA Mobile Unit will be on-hand for further assistance.

Don't have Microsoft Word? No worries!

For students who do not have Microsoft Word, or Word Perfect on their computers, there is a FREE alternative. Yes, we like FREE, too!!

Try using Open Office (www.openoffice.org). It's an open-source, fully functional office suite of programs that cost absolutely nothing. The only thing to remember is to be sure to save as a .doc (for Word). The default is different.

From their website: "OpenOffice.org 3 is the leading open-source office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more. It is available in many languages and works on all common computers. It stores all your data in an international open standard formatfree of charge for any purpose. "

If you're a MAC user, no worries here, either! Try this site: Open Office for MAC (http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/). and can also read and write files from other common office software packages.

Your responses help us find ways to improve our courses for you and those who follow you. We strive to keep moving forward with technology and content in your courses, but only if it is helping you. If the content or technology is blocking you from learning, we want to know! If you have ideas on how to improve the content or technology, we want to know that, too!

Where can you find your course's surveys? Look in the last Learning Module, it's supposed to be there. If not, click on the Web Links button on the left-hand menu in your course. The survey should be listed near the bottom of the Web Links.

If all else fails, let your instructor know that you want to take the survey!
